How to install Methmine VPN on Android

The Android app is downloaded from our website as an APK file. Installing it takes a couple of minutes.

You need a phone or tablet with Android 8.0 or later and a 64-bit processor. The APK won’t install on 32-bit devices.

Installing

  1. On your phone, open the Download page and tap Download APK.
  2. When the file has downloaded, open it from the browser notification or from your Downloads folder.
  3. If Android says installs from this source aren’t allowed, tap Settings and turn on Allow from this source. The permission goes to the app you opened the file with, usually your browser. The exact names depend on your phone’s manufacturer.
  4. Go back and tap Install. Android may show a warning because the app isn’t on Google Play.
  5. Open Methmine VPN and sign in. The ways to sign in are in How to sign in.
  6. The first time you connect, Android asks whether to allow the app to set up a VPN connection. Tap OK: Android won’t let the VPN turn on without it.

How to check the file against its SHA‑256

SHA‑256 is the file’s checksum. If the checksum of the file you downloaded matches the one on the Download page, the file arrived unchanged.

  1. On the Download page, copy the SHA‑256 line of the Android version.
  2. Work out the checksum of the downloaded file on a computer:
    • Windows: in Command Prompt, certutil -hashfile file-name.apk SHA256;
    • macOS: in Terminal, shasum -a 256 file-name.apk;
    • Linux: sha256sum file-name.apk.
  3. Compare the two lines. Upper or lower case doesn’t matter.

If they don’t match, don’t install that file. Download it again from methminevpn.com and let us know.

How to check the app’s signature

All our APKs are signed with the same key. Certificate owner: CN=METHMINE LLC, O=METHMINE LLC, C=US. SHA‑256 fingerprint of the certificate:

1C:28:14:FB:06:05:97:53:3C:98:F7:B1:C4:E0:2E:21:96:EF:6E:18:F2:C0:37:8E:3D:F9:0E:21:B0:56:A1:D1

You can check it with apksigner from the Android SDK build-tools: apksigner verify --print-certs file-name.apk. The SHA‑256 fingerprint in the output must match this one.

Updates

A new version installs over the old one and keeps you signed in. You don’t need to remove the old version.

You can update right in the app:

  1. Open the ⋮ menu at the top right, next to the bell, and choose Update.
  2. Tap Download and install. The app checks the file’s checksum itself.
  3. Tap Install, then Update in the Android window. The first time, Android asks you to allow the app to install from unknown sources.

After the update the VPN reconnects by itself within a few seconds. The latest version is also always on the Download page.
